What you’ll do

Most employers hire pallet repair technicians to keep a steady flow of serviceable pallets for warehouses and distribution centers. Your job is to restore pallets to an acceptable standard quickly, safely, and with consistent quality.

Repair workflow (typical)

  • Inspect & grade incoming pallets (damage level, missing boards, cracked stringers).
  • Sort pallets for repair, reuse, or recycling/disposal according to site rules.
  • Repair using hand tools and pneumatic tools (remove nails, replace boards, reinforce weak areas).
  • Quality check alignment and stability; ensure no protruding nails or hazards.
  • Stack & stage finished pallets; keep lanes and exits clear (5S-style housekeeping).

Tools & equipment you may use

  • Pneumatic nail gun/stapler (site-provided or site-approved)
  • Hammer, pry bar, nail puller, measuring tape
  • Chop saw / reciprocal saw (where permitted), repair jigs
  • Banding/strapping tools and corner protection
  • Pallet jack or forklift (only if trained/authorized)

Physical demands & safety

  • Standing most of the shift; repetitive handling and fast-paced repair cycles
  • Regular lifting and carrying (weights vary by pallet type)
  • Strict PPE: safety footwear, gloves, eye/ear protection as required by the site
  • Follow lockout/tagout and tool-safety rules where applicable

Pay in Canada (gross) and what changes it

Market pay depends on province, site standards, experience, and whether the employer uses hourly-only pay or hourly + productivity incentives.

Profile Typical gross range What usually drives it
Entry / training period 18–21 CAD/hour Training speed, attendance, safe tool use, basic quality
Standard performer 20–24 CAD/hour Throughput, low rework, consistent grading, shift flexibility
Experienced / high output 23–28 CAD/hour Complex repairs, consistent productivity, mentoring, equipment familiarity
What can increase your total earnings: overtime (often paid at a premium depending on provincial rules and employer policy), shift differentials for evenings/nights (where offered), and productivity incentives (piece-rate or bonus) at some sites.

Pay ranges are indicative and gross. Actual pay depends on province, overtime, shift premiums, experience, and employer policy.

Work conditions you should expect

Schedule

  • Common patterns: day shifts; some sites run evenings or rotating schedules
  • Overtime can occur during peak logistics periods
  • Breaks and shift length depend on provincial rules and site policy

Workplace

  • Warehouse, pallet depot, or yard setting (indoor/outdoor mix)
  • Noise and dust can be present; PPE compliance is standard
  • Team-based operation with production targets
Tools & PPE: many employers provide site tools and require you to bring or wear approved PPE (at minimum safety footwear). Always follow site training and tool authorization rules.

Work authorization in Canada (documents & compliance)

To work legally in Canada, you must have valid work authorization that matches the job and location conditions set by Canadian authorities and the employer.

Common authorization types (high-level)

  • Employer-specific work authorization: tied to a named employer and conditions (duration/location where applicable).
  • Open work authorization: allows work for different employers under qualifying categories.

Exact eligibility depends on your situation; employers follow compliance rules and may require verification before start.

What employers typically verify

  • Identity document(s) and legal work status
  • Ability to complete onboarding and payroll setup
  • Safety orientation completion (site-specific)
  • Background checks if required for the site (varies)
Important: this page is informational and does not replace official guidance. Your actual onboarding checklist depends on employer policy and the province.

Candidate fit

You are a good fit if you…

  • can work with consistent pace while keeping quality stable
  • treat safety rules as non-negotiable (PPE, tool discipline, clean lanes)
  • are comfortable with hands-on, repetitive repair cycles
  • can follow grading standards and accept feedback without friction
  • can handle an on-site warehouse/yard environment
  • can show up reliably for shifts (attendance is critical)

This role is not for you if you…

  • avoid physical work or cannot stand for most of the shift
