The work permit and national D visa are two different procedures. The employer handles the work-permit stage; the applicant handles the visa stage.

Important distinction

The candidate does not submit the Polish work-permit application personally. Under the current procedure, the Polish employing entity is the party to the proceeding and files through praca.gov.pl.

For Chinese citizens, the simplified declaration procedure used for certain nationalities is not the normal route. Unless a legal exemption applies, employment with a Polish entity requires the appropriate work permit.

Do not buy a “work permit” from an intermediary. A genuine employer-side permit is connected to the employer, foreign national and employment conditions stated in the administrative proceeding.

Poland national D work visa: official document checklist for China

The following list reflects the current work-visa checklist published by the Polish mission in China. The consul may request additional documents or an interview.

Core documents

  • Visa application form completed in Latin alphabet and signed by the applicant.
  • One colour photo on a white background, 35 × 45 mm, not older than six months, without retouching.
  • Passport plus required copies. The travel document must be no more than 10 years old, valid for at least 90 days after the planned departure from Poland/Schengen, and contain at least two blank pages.
  • Travel medical insurance valid for the entire intended stay with minimum coverage of €30,000, including emergency treatment, medical repatriation and transport in the event of death.
  • Original and copy of the Polish work permit, or the employer confirmation required when a work permit is legally unnecessary.
  • Proof of accommodation for the intended stay: registration certificate, lease, hotel reservation or another accepted lending/accommodation contract. The document should show accommodation cost.
  • Flight reservation — reservation only.

China-specific and professional documents

  • Applicant CV with translation into English or Polish.
  • Occupation qualification certificate if applicable, with copy and the authentication/legalisation required by the checklist.
  • Chinese ID and hukou — copies of the ID and all pages of the hukou for Chinese nationals.
  • Proof of residence in the current consular district if the applicant's registered/permanent location is outside that district.
  • For non-Chinese passport holders in China: original residence permit with copy, valid for at least three months after the visa application date.
  • For non-Chinese citizens applying for a national visa: non-criminal record legalised or bearing an Apostille.
  • Additional supporting documents may be submitted if they help explain the purpose and circumstances of the trip.

Translation rule: the official work checklist states that required documents must be translated into Polish or English in a separate document where instructed. Missing required documents may result in refusal.

Where to submit the Poland work visa in China

Your permanent residence determines the competent Polish consular district. For the mainland-China outsourced route, book with the Poland VFS network and submit at an eligible Visa Application Centre within the appropriate district.

Beijing consular district

Beijing, Tianjin, Gansu, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanxi, Tibet and Xinjiang.

Relevant VFS cities: Beijing, Changsha, Jinan, Shenyang, Wuhan and Xi'an.

Shanghai consular district

Shanghai municipality and the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

Hong Kong and Macao

Permanent residents of the Hong Kong SAR or Macao SAR fall under the Consulate General of Poland in Hong Kong and should follow that mission's separate national-visa instructions rather than the mainland VFS route.

What “Type A work permit” means in 2026

“Type A” remains a familiar search term, but current Polish administrative pages describe the procedure as a work permit for a foreign national employed by a Polish entity. This is the relevant employer-side route when the foreign national will work in Poland under an agreement with a Polish employing entity, unless an exemption applies.

The employer files electronically through praca.gov.pl. The candidate's passport data and any required qualification evidence form part of the application file.
