BIM Metal Structures — Steel Design & Detailing Services with USD/ton Pricing
We provide BIM metal structures design and detailing services across the US and EU — from LOD 200 concept models to LOD 450 fabrication and erection packs. Our Tekla/Revit teams model steel structures and connections, prepare GA, shop and assembly drawings, export NC/DSTV/DXF, and work to AISC, AWS, EN 1993 and EN 1090 for industrial and building steel structures BIM projects.
This page explains how our BIM metal structures workflow is organized, what you receive at each LOD level, and how USD per ton steel detailing pricing is calculated for different regions, complexity and codes.
BIM Metal Structures pricing — USD per ton by LOD (US/EU steel projects)
We usually price Tekla/Revit BIM metal structures in USD per ton based on the approved BOM/model weight. Light-gauge and very light steel systems can also be priced per m², but for most industrial and building steel projects USD/t steel detailing gives the most transparent cost and makes it easy to compare in-house and outsourced BIM steel detailing services.
LOD 200 — concept & coordination
Concept BIM metal structures model for steel, used for coordination and early budgeting.
| USD/t | Scope |
|---|---|
| $190–$290 | Concept steel structures BIM model, main grids and members, basic member sizing, early clash checks and simple MTO/BOQ for budgeting. |
LOD 300 — production model (no joints)
Steel structures BIM model without detailed joints, suitable for design coordination and quantities.
| USD/t | Scope |
|---|---|
| $290–$410 | Member-level Tekla/Revit steel model, sections and materials per design, MTO/BOQ for ordering, basic reports and coordination views for BIM metal structures. |
LOD 350 — model with connections & specs
BIM metal structures model with joints, suitable for coordinated design and detailed MTO.
| USD/t | Scope |
|---|---|
| $410–$690 | Bolted and welded joints modeled, connection macros and details, MTO/BOQ by assemblies, reports for procurement, and basic erection information for steel structures BIM. |
LOD 400 — fabrication steel detailing
Full BIM steel detailing services with shop drawings and assemblies ready for fabrication.
| USD/t | Scope |
|---|---|
| $690–$990 | Detailed Tekla steel model, marks, bolts and welds, shop and assembly drawings, MTO/BOQ per lot, revision management and IFC/BCF exports for structural steel BIM projects. |
LOD 450 — fabrication + erection pack
Complete BIM metal structures package for fabrication and site erection.
| USD/t | Scope |
|---|---|
| $790–$1,290 | Full LOD 400 scope plus erection drawings, lotting and sequence, NC/DSTV/NC1 and DXF exports, lists per truck or crane lift when required for complex steel structures. |
Minimum order: $1,300. For light-gauge metal framing we can quote per m² (typical range $10–$24/m²) with separate rates for shop and erection drawings.
Region & complexity coefficients for BIM steel structures
Region / Codes
BIM metal structures are detailed to the relevant codes and execution classes. Regional factors reflect additional coordination and documentation requirements for US and EU steel projects.
| Region | Factor |
|---|---|
| EU (EN 1993, EN 1090 EXC2) | ×1.00 |
| EU EXC3 / EXC4 | ×1.05–×1.12 |
| USA (AISC / AWS / OSHA) | ×1.08–×1.15 |
| Seismic / high wind (ASCE 7 / EN 1998) | +10–20% on affected elements |
Complexity
Complexity is determined by connections density, custom details and materials. It helps keep steel detailing prices per ton realistic for both simple and highly detailed BIM metal structures.
| Metric | Factor |
|---|---|
| <35 connections per ton | ×1.00 |
| 35–65 connections per ton | ×1.15 |
| >65 connections per ton or many custom nodes | ×1.30–×1.50 |
| Stainless, CFS or high-class steel | +10–25% |
What is included in BIM metal structures detailing (LOD 350+)
Unified BIM environment
Steel structures BIM modeling in Tekla/Revit, IFC/BCF exchange, BEP-compliant naming, MTO/BOQ and standard reports for fabrication and erection. All BIM metal structures services follow your project BIM execution plan.
Connections modeled
Bolted and welded connections, macros and custom details, marking and lotting, revision control and support for inspection and EN 1090 documentation across the steel structure.
QA/QC & coordination
Weekly progress exports, clash summaries, tracked RFIs, and coordinated updates with other BIM disciplines for industrial, commercial and building BIM metal structures projects.
Add-ons (fixed rates)
These add-ons are used when you need extra checks, additional drafting or NC/DXF preparation on top of the base BIM metal structures scope.
| Add-on | Rate |
|---|---|
| Connection/joint check (IDEA or equivalent) | $25–$39 / joint |
| Erection drawings (GA) | $35–$59 / sheet or $14–$22 / t |
| Shop/assembly sets (A1/A2) | $32–$49 / sheet |
| NC/DSTV/NC1, DXF export | $7–$12 / t |
| BIM coordination (RFIs, clash fixing) | $22–$34/h or $110–$180 / 100 fixes |
Typical throughput for BIM metal structures at LOD 350–400 is 25–40 t/week/team. Rush windows of 48–72 hours are available with multipliers ×1.25–×1.50.
Volume discounts: >100 t per project −5%, >300 t per framework −10%, 12-month framework agreements up to −12%.
Worked examples for BIM metal structures pricing
These examples show how USD/ton steel detailing pricing works when region and complexity coefficients, shop drawings and NC/DXF exports are included for BIM metal structures projects.
Example A — EU warehouse 520 t, EXC2, LOD 350
- Base scope: 520 t × $520/t = $270,400
- Connections density ×1.15 ⇒ $310,960
- Shop drawings: 400 sheets × $39 = $15,600
- NC/DSTV: 520 t × $9 = $4,680
Estimated total: $331,240
Example B — US pipe racks 180 t, AISC, LOD 400 with seismic
- Base scope: 180 t × $690/t = $124,200
- AISC / AWS factor ×1.12 ⇒ $139,104
- Seismic detailing +15% ⇒ $159,969.60
- Erection sheets: 180 t × $18 = $3,240
Estimated total: $163,210 (rounded)
FAQ — BIM metal structures steel design & detailing services
How do you measure the scope — per ton or per sheet?
We quote BIM metal structures detailing primarily in USD per ton based on the approved BOM/model weight. For light-gauge steel or small scopes we can quote per m², and we add separate rates for shop and erection sheets when you need only drafting on top of an existing steel structures BIM model.
Which codes and standards do you follow?
For EU projects we work to EN 1993 and EN 1090 (EXC2–EXC4). For US projects we follow AISC, AWS and OSHA requirements. Seismic and wind checks are handled per ASCE 7 or EN 1998 with appropriate detailing rules for the affected steel elements.
What do you need to start a BIM metal structures project?
We usually need an IFC/STEP or Tekla/Revit steel structures BIM model (if available), plans and sections, a list of deliverables (shop drawings, erection drawings, NC/DXF), code and execution class requirements, target schedule and lot sizes for staged deliveries.
What is your typical delivery pace?
For LOD 350–400 steel detailing our standard throughput is 25–40 t/week/team with weekly drops or milestones. Rush windows of 48–72 hours are possible with higher resource loading and apply multipliers ×1.25–×1.50 on unit prices.
What are your payment terms and typical exclusions?
Standard terms are 30% advance, 40% at around 50% progress, and 30% on final delivery. PE/SE stamps, on-site supervision and special materials (for example stainless steel, CFS or high-class steel) are excluded from base rates and quoted separately when needed.
